Psychosocial Disability
Riverina Counselling has many years of experience supporting people who have a psychosocial disability. These conditions can include a range of mental health and neurodevelopmental conditions. These conditions can interfere with our ability to communicate with others, form social connections due to anxiety or even trauma, difficulties with daily living, such as cooking and cleaning, as well as community impacts by needing support to attend medical appointments or see therapists.
Conditions such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective issues, personality issues, intellectual disability and even anxiety and depression can all be considered aspects of psychosocial disability. The biggest issue we often hear from people with a psychosocial disability is the profound isolation and disconnection it often creates.
Often, there is also trauma as over the years people have suffered extensive bullying or exclusion due the barriers their conditions create. This means that treatment is often multilayered and needs to consider all the above impacts.
We look at the effects on the functional capacity, which is the ability to achieve things that are important to your and how these conditions can be a barrier to achieving them. Many people struggle with issues such as short-term memory, for example, in which case we may consider what aids and prompts could be useful whilst aiming to keep a person as independent as possible in the least restrictive way.
NDIS Psychosocial Disability Support
We support clients who are plan-managed and self-managed to work towards their goals. The NDIS supports many participants and aims to try and improve quality of life by accessing the needed supports and therapies to do so. We work with many participants on the NDIS to form goals and work toward these, finding ways to manage and overcome the barriers people face on a daily basis.
Functional Capacity Assessment
We can do functional capacity assessments for people with disabilities and use the latest tools to support a thorough and comprehensive assessment. These can be helpful when going for plan reviews and to measure progress and changes over time. We also use the VINELAND-3 scales that are empirically validated to support this.
