Trauma
We recognise that trauma exists in many ways, shapes and forms. This can vary from a range of conditions such as Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), Personality Disorders as well as areas such as domestic violence and grief and loss. Trauma can also exist when things rapidly change, such as lifelong or debilitating illness or the impacts on culture over generations. Due to this, trauma needs to suit the individual and so does treatment.
Trauma often affects every aspect of life. This means it can intrude on our capacity to do things meaningful to us, such as our hobbies or studying and work. It also tends to have a drastic impact on our relationships with family and loved ones. Trauma can cause people to become distant, disconnected or even angry and irritable due to the lasting impacts of anger and shame it can have on the person.
When we work with people who have experienced trauma we look at how this has affected the whole of life, relationships and even daily functioning.
How long does trauma therapy take?
This is hard to answer, as it depends on the person. People usually do need to commit to ongoing, longer-term work. Trauma therapy cannot be rushed, and it is often not safe to do so. We take time to learn to be able to feel safe enough to begin talking about how things have affected us over time. Some people start getting results in a few sessions, whilst others may take up to a year or more.
What do we do?
Riverina Counselling employs a range of trauma therapies to support the individual and we tailor these to suit your needs. This means we will discuss this with you prior to commencing, as well as the best approach we think that may be a good fit to move toward change. We can review this at any point if things change in therapy.
